Abdominoplasty or Tummy Tuck

A flabby abdomen is often the result of pregnancy, weight loss, or simply poor elasticity of the skin. An abdominoplasty, also referred to as a tummy tuck, can remove loose, excess skin and fat, and tighten weak fascia.

What happens during a tummy tuck?

A horizontal incision, just above the pubic area is made (the length will depend on the amount of skin and or fat to be removed). Any excess fat is removed by liposuction, to achieve a smooth, flat stomach. The fascia, which overlies the abdominal muscles is tightened, which helps narrow the waist and flatten the stomach.

The skin around the bellybutton is repositioned, leaving a fine scar where the bellybutton has been re-sutured.

How long does the procedure take?

An abdominoplasty takes approximately 2 - 3 hours.

What type of anaesthetic is used?

An abdominoplasty is carried out under general anaesthetic.

Where does the procedure take place?

Surgery is carried out in the hospital.

How long will I be in hospital?

Two nights in hospital.

You will need to be accompanied, and it is strictly forbidden to drive following surgery.

What do I need to do after the procedure?

Following the surgery, the abdominal incision and bellybutton incision will be covered with a surgical dressing. To help control post-operative tension and pain, one or two drains will be in situ to avoid any excess of fluid accumulating in the surgical area. The drains are removed before leaving the hospital. A compression garment is fitted, the garment will help control the post-operative swelling and give support, it should be worn as much as possible for approximately 6 weeks.

  • A daily shower is recommended, paying attention to drying the wounds well (the use of a hair dryer can be helpful) the wounds will need to be disinfected and dressed, as prescribed.

  • If non-absorbable sutures are used, it will be necessary to have them removed 2 weeks following surgery.

  • Avoid any heavy lifting, and strenuous abdominal movements, for approximately 2-3 weeks.

  • Avoid physical and sport activities for approximately 6 weeks, although walking is encouraged.

  • As of the 3 rd week, gentle massage of the skin scars, with a cream adapted for the purpose, is encourage to help the scars to smooth out and eventually fade.

  • You may return to work after 2 weeks (depending on the nature of work)

  • Do not drive for the first week, or even two.

  • Rest, with legs raised as much as possible during the first week.
